The Backpack Program
The Backpack Program exists for one reason – to ensure that our children are removed from danger with their self-respect in place. The goal of The Backpack Program is to provide each child entering foster care with a backpack that contains special items that help make the removal less traumatic. Backpacks are distributed to children when they enter foster care.
The backpacks contain pajamas, toothbrushes, hair brushes, school supplies, journals, and even small stuffed animals, to help make the removal process a little less traumatic for our children. We believe this program helps erase some of the negative images fixed in children’s memories during the trauma of removal.
Whether received at the time the child is placed in a foster home, or shortly thereafter, the backpacks are a gentle way of showing these children that other people care about them – care enough to give them a gift during a very difficult time for them.
These backpacks stay with the children. They are theirs to keep whether they remain in foster care or return home. What also stays with them is the memory that, when their lives were dramatically changed, someone thought enough of them to give them a gift to help make them feel special.
